Early Life

Kane was born and raised in Canorate, the bustling capital of Molthune. His family line carried an old hereditary curse, commonly referred to as Shadow’s Mark (later understood more specifically as a spiritbound affliction).

From childhood, Kane showed unusual talent for the occult. His parents feared the stigma attached to their bloodline and tried to suppress his gifts, but the pull of forbidden knowledge only intensified. In secret, Kane turned to hidden tomes, old rites, and dangerous questions better left unanswered.

The Canorate Years: Junk and Whiskers

Kane’s path crossed with Canorate’s criminal underbelly, where he met two people who would become family:

  • Junk — a mischievous goblin with a talent for obtaining forbidden information.
  • Whiskers — a daring, cunning catfolk rogue Kane met by chance in the alleys.

What began as an opportunistic alliance became a true bond. Together they raided forbidden archives, chased occult leads, and survived dangers that would have broken lesser crews. Over time, partnership became loyalty, and loyalty became kinship.

Even when their paths later diverged, the trust forged in Canorate endured.

Shadow’s Mark and Inner Conflict

Kane’s curse was never passive. It whispered temptations—promises of power, insight, and control purchased at moral cost.

His life became a constant tension between:

  • using dark, inherited power to protect others,
  • and resisting the same power’s pull toward obsession and ruin.

Recognizing the danger, Kane left Canorate to seek answers beyond his city: how to master the curse, how to survive it, and whether it can ever be broken.

Hereditary Curse: Spiritbound Affliction

Generations ago, Kane’s ancestors were respected intermediaries between the living and the dead in Canorate. Their spiritual gifts drew the attention of an enigmatic entity known as the Whispering Shade.

Fascinated and threatened by the family’s influence, the Whispering Shade cursed their bloodline. Since then, descendants are born spiritbound—able to touch the unseen world, but also exposed to its dangers.

What the Affliction Does

The curse binds Kane’s psyche to the ethereal realm. It grants real advantages, but at real cost.

  • Mechanical Drawback:
    • -1 circumstance penalty to Will saves vs incorporeal creatures

Current Arc

Kane now walks a narrow line: psychic power on one side, corruption on the other. Armed with discipline, occult skill, and loyalty to those he trusts, he seeks redemption without surrendering to darkness.

His central question is not whether he has power.

It is whether he can decide what kind of man wields it.
